301-304 Interchange

Centreville, MD

David A. Bramble, Inc. was honored to lead the $34 million construction of the MD 304 and US 301 interchange, a critical infrastructure improvement project designed to enhance safety and streamline traffic flow. The project replaced a dangerous at-grade intersection with a modern interchange that has since improved conditions for the 22,000 motorists using US 301 and the 5,200 daily travelers on MD 304, including a significant volume of commercial trucks, which account for one-quarter of the traffic on US 301.

Key Features

Two-Lane Bridge Over US 301

At the core of the project was a two-lane bridge that now efficiently carries MD 304 traffic over US 301.

This bridge replaced the previous at-grade intersection, where high-speed conflicts posed a significant safety risk. The new structure has dramatically reduced the likelihood of accidents and created a safer, more efficient route for motorists traveling through the area.

Single-Lane Roundabouts

To complement the new bridge, two single-lane roundabouts were constructed on either side of MD 304.

These roundabouts guide traffic safely through the interchange, minimizing congestion and enhancing traffic flow. The roundabouts play a key role in controlling vehicle speeds, particularly for the high volume of commercial trucks that regularly use US 301.

Park & Ride Facility

In response to the growing demand for commuter services, a 25-space paved park-and-ride lot was constructed in the northwest corner of the interchange. This lot offers a convenient option for commuters and helps reduce local traffic congestion by encouraging carpooling and the use of public transportation.

Bicycle and Pedestrian Infrastructure

The project also prioritized the inclusion of bicycle-compatible shoulders on the MD 304 bridge. These lanes provide safe passage for cyclists and pedestrians, allowing them to traverse the interchange alongside motorized traffic. This feature supports the area’s focus on multi-modal transportation and creates safer, more accessible routes for non-motorists.

Significant Community Impact

The completion of this project has delivered lasting benefits for the region:

  • Increased Safety: By replacing the at-grade intersection with a grade-separated interchange, the project has dramatically reduced the number of accidents, particularly for high-speed, high-volume commercial truck traffic.
  • Improved Traffic Flow: The roundabouts and bridge have significantly alleviated congestion, allowing the 22,000 daily motorists on US 301 and the 5,200 daily motorists on MD 304 to travel more efficiently.
  • Support for Commuters: The park-and-ride lot provides an essential service for commuters, offering a practical solution for reducing individual driving and encouraging shared transportation options.
  • Sustainable Transportation Options: With bicycle and pedestrian-friendly features, the project aligns with environmental goals by supporting alternative, sustainable transportation methods.
