About Us:

We are a Heavy/Highway General Contractor based in Chestertown Maryland. The Company owns and maintains a fleet of over 300 pieces of equipment used in the construction of utilities (sewer, water, storm drain), earthmoving, and asphalt paving with several gravel pits and two asphalt plants.

Nature of Work:

This is the beginning level of general construction work.  An employee in this class must be able to perform heavy physical labor outdoors in all types of weather.  He should understand the care and use of basic hand tools and is expected to learn from more experienced workers and foreman the proper care and use of all the various hand tools, power tools and equipment used by construction.

This employee will also learn basic precautions for his own personal safety and the safety of co-workers to be observed when using the various tools and equipment.

This employee works as a member of a construction crew and is supervised closely by a foreman. Work is evaluated by the foreman and other supervisory personnel in view of the employees demonstrated ability to accomplish his assigned work effectively, to learn some of the more difficult tasks usually performed by the experienced workers, to observe the basic safety precautions, and to work cooperatively with other crew members. This employee does not supervise others.

Minimum Qualifications:

Applicants must be able to perform heavy physical labor outdoors in all types of weather.  Candidates may be given a medical examination to determine physical ability to perform the job. 

Conditions of Employment:

The nature of this position may require that the employee be able to operate a motor vehicle.  Therefore, a valid Maryland Motor Vehicle Operator’s license may be required prior to appointment.

Examples of Work (Examples are Illustrative Only):

Prepares grade, builds forms, places reinforcement bars and pours concrete for a wide variety of cement concrete structures. These structures may be simple retaining walls to sewage treatment buildings, sidewalks, curbs and gutters, driveways, and drainage inlets.

  • Performs duties incidental to the work such as curing concrete, striping, dismantling and cleaning forms.
  • Cleans up site following concrete work.
  • Performs other lesser duties as required.
  • Lifting steal forms that can weigh as much as 50 lbs.
  • Installing forms which involves bending, stooping and use of entire body in a squatting or bended knee position.
  • Concrete finishing requires the same squatting or bended knee position, standing and pushing with hand tools.
  • Shoveling and or hand digging can be required.
  • There are minimal breaks in which he would sit and is mostly on his feet for the entire day.

Essential Requirements of Work:

  • Working knowledge of the standard practices, methods and materials used in concrete construction work.
  • Ability to read and interpret plans and make mathematical calculations related to the work knowledge of safe and proper forming techniques.
  • Elementary knowledge of the care and proper use of basic hand tools used for digging and striking
  • Ability to use basic hand tools used for digging and striking
  • To learn the proper care and use of all hand and power tools used in construction
  • To follow oral instructions
  • To work cooperatively with others
  • To learn basic construction work techniques and procedures
  • To perform heavy physical labor outdoors in all types of weather

    Physical Requirements:

    • Ability to perform physical labor indoors and outdoors in all types of weather.
    • Ability to lift 50+ pounds.
    • Body positioning includes bending, twisting, kneeling, crouching, stooping, crawling, standing, walking, climbing, and using hands to handle, control, or feel objects, tools, or controls.
    • Must pass a pre-employment drug test.
    • Random drug testing is performed monthly.
