Pipe Layer

About the Role

The Pipe Layer is responsible for installing underground piping systems for stormwater, sanitary sewer, water, and drainage projects. This role involves preparing trenches, positioning and aligning pipe sections, sealing joints, and ensuring installations meet project specifications, safety standards, and local codes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lay and install pipe for storm sewers, sanitary sewer lines, water mains, and drainage systems
  • Prepare trenches by grading, leveling, and bedding pipe with gravel or sand
  • Align pipe sections accurately and secure them in place
  • Seal joints using cement, glue, rubber gaskets, or welding techniques as required
  • Inspect pipes for defects and ensure proper slope and alignment
  • Backfill trenches and compact soil after pipe installation
  • Assist equipment operators and laborers as needed
  • Read and interpret blueprints, site plans, and grade stakes
  • Follow OSHA safety regulations and job site safety procedures
  • Perform routine maintenance and cleanup of work areas

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent (preferred)
  • Previous experience in utility construction, pipeline work, or underground infrastructure
  • Knowledge of pipe materials (PVC, concrete, ductile iron, HDPE)
  • Ability to use hand tools, laser levels, and measuring instruments
  • Understanding of trench safety and shoring requirements
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow instructions

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift and carry materials up to 75 lbs
  • Frequent bending, kneeling, climbing, and working in confined spaces
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions
  • Stand and walk for extended periods during shifts

Work Environment

  • Construction sites, roadways, and excavation areas
  • Exposure to noise, heavy equipment, and varying weather conditions
  • May require early morning starts, overtime, or weekend work depending on project schedules

Preferred Certifications (Not Required)

  • OSHA 10 or OSHA 30
  • Trench Safety / Excavation Safety Training
