1930s
The origins of David A. Bramble, Inc.
David A. Bramble, Inc. traces its roots to the late 1930s when Mr. Bramble began his career as a truck owner and operator. At the onset of World War II, David sold his trucks and saved the money, which he would later use to launch his business. He enlisted in the Army Air Force in December 1941, serving as a pilot in the 8th Air Force. After returning home in 1947, David invested his savings to enter the construction business with several partners. By the early 1950s, he had bought out his partners and established the company as a sole proprietorship.
1960s
Entering the Asphalt Business
In 1961, the company and entered the hot mix asphalt business, purchasing its first asphalt plant in Queen Anne’s County. The company paved Route 213 and took on several secondary highway projects across Maryland’s Eastern Shore, opening a second plant in Easton in 1966.
1980s
Expansion & Collaboration
During the 1980s, the company continued to thrive, building highways on the upper Eastern Shore, including the dualization of Route 404. A joint venture with McLean Contracting led to major projects on Route 50 as part of the “Reach the Beach” initiative. The company earned the Sheldon G. Hayes Award in 1986 for major highways—the first company in Maryland to receive this honor.
2000s
The New Millenium & Beyond
By the 2000s, David A. Bramble, Inc. had grown significantly. The company owned three hot mix asphalt plants, a large fleet of trucks, and over 150 pieces of major construction equipment. Major projects included the Scarborough Road and Puncheon Run Connector in Delaware, as well as overpass construction in Maryland. Today, the company continues to operate as a leading contractor on the Eastern Shore.
1950s
Growth & Expansion
The company initially focused on soil conservation, smaller grading projects, and subcontracting for highway projects. By the mid-1950s, the company began bidding on and constructing county roads. In 1959, as the company grew, Mr. Bramble decided to incorporate his business, and David A. Bramble, Inc. was formed.
1970s
Awards & Major Projects
In the 1970s, David C. Bramble (Danny) joined the business as a project manager after returning from military service. The company continued to win Maryland Asphalt Association awards for quality paving and secured its first multimillion-dollar project with the Choptank River Bridge and Route 404 reconstruction. This project led to the prestigious National Asphalt Paving Association (NAPA) Award for Quality Paving in 1980.
1990s
A Legacy Of Excellence
In the 1990s, David C. Bramble took full ownership of the company, continuing its expansion. The company completed major projects in both Maryland and Delaware, including US Route 113, MD Route 213, and a joint venture to build the SR1 Puncheon Run Connector. These projects solidified David A. Bramble, Inc. as a regional leader in infrastructure development.
