Winter Walking Safety: How to Prevent Slips, Trips, and Falls on the Job

Snow and ice on pavers

As winter sets in, it brings with it cold weather, snow, and ice—all key ingredients for an increase in slips, trips, and falls, especially on outdoor job sites, parking lots, and walkways.

Whether you’re working onsite or simply moving between vehicles and buildings, icy conditions can lead to serious injuries that may linger well into spring—just when construction activity is ramping back up. But with a few simple precautions, you can greatly reduce your risk and stay safe throughout the season.

Here are smart, practical tips to help you walk safely during icy winter conditions:

Winter Walking Safety Tips

  • Wear proper footwear. Choose boots or overshoes with slip-resistant soles made from materials like rubber or neoprene. Avoid smooth leather or plastic soles, which increase your risk of slipping.
  • Check the surface before you step out. When exiting a vehicle, take a moment to assess the ground. If it’s coated with ice, consider parking in a safer, drier area if possible.
  • Use your vehicle for support. When getting in or out, use the door frame and seat back to stabilize yourself before standing.
  • Never jump from vehicles or equipment. Always step down carefully to maintain balance and control.
  • Keep your hands free. Avoid walking with your hands in your pockets—you’ll need them for balance if you begin to slip.
  • Take small, shuffling steps. Especially on icy surfaces, shorter steps help you maintain stability.
  • Avoid carrying heavy or awkward loads. Large boxes or bags can throw off your balance. Use a cart or make multiple trips if needed.
  • Walk flat-footed. Curl your toes slightly under and walk as flat-footed as possible to maximize surface contact and grip.
  • Watch for uneven surfaces. Avoid icy curbs or other uneven ground that could increase the risk of falling.
  • Stay focused. Refrain from texting, digging through bags, or any distractions while walking in slick conditions.
  • Test questionable areas. Gently tap your foot on surfaces that look slick to gauge how icy they are before committing your full weight.

Stay Safe, Stay Productive

Winter weather doesn’t need to slow down your momentum or put you at risk. With these preventative steps, you’ll reduce the chance of a slip or fall and stay on track for a safe and productive season.

Let’s make safety a habit—every season, every step of the way!

Women in Construction: Tell your daughters… Everyone has a place in the construction industry

Women in Construction Week™ (WIC Week) celebrates the vital role women play in the construction industry. During this year’s WIC Week, the Maryland Asphalt Association’s Annual Paving Conference highlighted the work of Maryland Women of Asphalt (WOFA), led by Stefani Martella of F.O. Day Company. WOFA’s mission is to empower women in asphalt careers through Awareness, Knowledge, and Community, while organizations like The House That She Built focus on workforce development and encouraging women to explore careers in the skilled trades. As someone inspired by my father’s passion for construction, I believe it’s crucial to promote the many opportunities in this industry to the next generation and beyond.
